About Lumaj

This website is about our favourite hobby: hiking GR trails.
It tells you the stories about our hikes and in a broader sense it informs about anything that touches upon hiking. You'll find practical hints, links to websites of colleague-hikers and to practical organisation sources, the use of GPS ...

Over_Lumaj_2Lumaj is the contraction of our names - Luc and Majella. We're both 56 and are living in Antwerpen (Antwerp).
Whenever possible we go out to hike some part of a GR trail. Most often we venture out together, but it also happens that one of us takes off all by him/herself, or with others.

Hiking is something we've been doing for quite some time.
In the early days we usually went to the Ardennes and hiked the ‘Avontuurlijke wandelingen’ (Adventurous hikes) and ‘Meerdaagse trektochten’ (Several days hikes), published in the Lannoo books. Along the way, it struck us that at the most beautiful and interesting places, we always noticed the white-red markings of a GR trail.
So, we became more and more attracted by the idea of systematically following a GR trail. No lack of hiking paths when following GR trails. Even in little Belgium there's a few thousand kilometers signposted!

Over_Lumaj_1'GR hiking' means walking from point A to point B.
To travel to and from those points we usually use public transport. That takes quite some preparation time and it isn't always easy. Sometimes we spend more time on train, tram and bus, then it takes to do the hike … That's one of the main reasons for limiting our hikes to 15 – 25 km a day. However, the advantage is that we're not only relaxing while hiking but also while traveling.
Exceptionally we may 'borrow' a neighbour's car, or we can ride along with others that accompany us on a hike. This mostly happens when our destination is too far away, or when it's impossible to reach it by public transport. When that's the case, we try to take a bike. After all, we still have to get from point A to point B, and a car can only be parked at one of those.

However we do it, the most important is that we want to enjoy it. Hiking is moving, breathing, becoming part of the surroundings, seeing landscapes change, discovering new places and regions, realising that we don't know our own country, broadening our minds, getting to know ourselves a bit better, learning how to cope with the circumstances, ... in short, it's a beautiful, cheap and usefull hobby.

Maybe this website may help others to enjoy all the nice things our environment has to offer, by using their own legs and strength.
We always welcome your reactions!

(original text in Dutch) Congratulations with your website! I will certainly recommend it to all my hiking friends. GR hiking is worthwhile. It shows that behind the major traffic roads in Flanders there's still beautiful natural regions to be found. Especially in the Ardennes it's still possible to hike for hours without meeting another person. GR paths make you discover areas where you would never come if they didn't exist. This site may turn into a meeting place for GR hikers.

The stock exchange crash of 2008 will be remembered in the history books as the Greatest Bank Robbery of all times.
The culprits were identified as the bankers themselves. They never were convicted for their crimes.
