GR 565 (Snieders trail) *
The 120 km. long GR 565 is one of Flanders' oldest hiking trails. The trail is also known as the Renier Sniederspad (pad = path/trail).
The Snieders brothers (August and Renier) were contemporaries of Hendrik Conscience, and just like him they were also gifted novel writers. But whereas Conscience became immortal as 'he who taught his people to read', the Snieders brothers dissapeared into oblivion.
Yet, they left us a beautiful hiking trail that crosses the Kempen region from Antwerp over Turnhout and Retie to Bladel in the Netherlands. Bladel was where they were born and Antwerp and Turnhout are the places where both spent most of their lifes. The GR 565 trail commemorates their journeys (on horse and by coach) through the Kempen region to regularly meet each other somewhere halfway.
