UNDERSTANDING YOUR GPS

Keep in mind that the articles published in this section concern a rapidly evolving technology. What was written yesterday, may be completely obsolete tomorrow!
In this section we want to provide background and technical info about the phenomenom GPS. If we have to believe the marketeers no hiker / cyclist should take the road without having the newest gadget: an 'outdoor GPS'. But meanwhile a new kind of competitor is already waiting to conquer this market: the smartphone.
We try to separate hype from reality, while at the same time pleading for more open standards in an up to now very divided knowledge field. We discuss the differences between tracks and routes, conversion possibilities, file formats, helpful computer applications, maps ... just to illustrate that with some simple common sense and without a lot of additional costs, it is possible to do nice and interesting things with a GPS system.
Don't look for GPS tracks here. Apart from a few exceptions we have no intention to offer free GPS tracks here. There are enough websites where GPS tracks can be found. Moreover we don't think we should publish hiking tracks that have been meticulously planned and realized by others (with all the voluntary work and idealism that goes with it). And since tracks generally don't contain any complementary information, you might as well walk around like a chicken without a head (Flemish expression) ...
PS: Up to now we didn't buy a GPS system. We first want to see how the market evolves. In the meantime we're lucky enough to know a fellow hiker who's enthousiasm for his outdoor GPS has cooled down and who's kind enough to let us use the thing so we can play with it from time to time. It's an eTrex Vista HCx model from Garmin. But who will win the battle for the market: the outdoor GPS or the smartphone?
